Jaime Reyes returns to the DCU in the upcoming Superman sequel
Xolo Maridueña is officially returning as Jaime Reyes / Blue Beetle in James Gunn’s upcoming DCU film Man of Tomorrow. The news marks the character’s long-awaited reintroduction into the new shared universe after his 2023 standalone movie.
According to TheWrap, Maridueña will reprise the role in the Superman sequel, which is currently in production and scheduled to hit theaters on July 9, 2027. This appearance fulfills a promise James Gunn made years ago when he stated that Blue Beetle would be part of the new DCU from the very beginning.
ComicBook.com reported that Hollywood trades have now confirmed Maridueña’s return as Blue Beetle’s official reintroduction to the DCU, with fans quickly celebrating the update online.
Delivering on Gunn’s Promise
James Gunn has repeatedly called Blue Beetle the “first DCU character.” The 2023 film, directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and starring Maridueña as the young Mexican-American hero who bonds with an alien scarab, was one of the final releases under the previous DC regime. Despite the universe reboot, Gunn and DC Studios co-CEO Peter Safran confirmed early on that Jaime Reyes would carry over into the new continuity.
MovieWeb previously covered Maridueña’s confirmation that he would continue the role in the new DCU, calling it an honor to be part of James Gunn’s vision.
Xolo Maridueña’s Journey with the Character
Maridueña made history as the first Latino actor to lead a live-action DC superhero film. In interviews, he has spoken passionately about representing Latino culture on screen and the personal meaning the role holds for him.

The Los Angeles Times recently highlighted Maridueña’s reflections on Blue Beetle and his commitment to authentic storytelling in superhero projects.
Even before this latest casting news, Maridueña had expressed confidence that Blue Beetle would return. In earlier conversations, he stated he was excited to continue Jaime’s story in the new DCU, whether through live-action or the animated series that has been in development.
What to Expect in ‘Man of Tomorrow’
Man of Tomorrow (also referred to as the Superman sequel) is shaping up to be a major crossover event in the early DCU. While specific details about Blue Beetle’s role remain under wraps, reports suggest he will appear alongside other heroes as the story expands the universe.
ComingSoon.net covered Peter Safran’s previous comments praising Maridueña’s performance and the long-term plans for the character in the DCU.
An animated Blue Beetle series featuring Maridueña is also still in the works, meaning fans can expect even more of Jaime Reyes in the coming years across different mediums.
A Win for Fans and Representation
Blue Beetle’s return is being viewed as a positive sign for how the new DCU is handling characters from the previous era. Rather than discarding well-received projects, Gunn and Safran appear focused on integrating strong entries like Blue Beetle into the larger tapestry.
The Direct and SuperHeroHype have both tracked the character’s journey and Gunn’s commitment to bringing him back into the fold.
With production already underway and a 2027 release date locked in, Man of Tomorrow is poised to be one of the most important early films in the new DCU — and Xolo Maridueña suiting up again as Blue Beetle is a major highlight for many fans.
