The Rip, Netflix’s crime thriller starring Ben Affleck and Matt Damon, has climbed to 136 million global views since its January release, landing it among the streamer’s biggest hits of the year so far. The figure comes from Netflix’s own mid-year engagement report, which MovieWeb says places the film second on Netflix’s list of most-watched movies released between January and June 2026, trailing only Alan Ritchson‘s War Machine, which posted 147 million views over the same stretch.
Plot and Cast
The film stars Damon and Affleck as Dane Dumars and J.D. Byrne, two leaders of a Miami-Dade Tactical Narcotics Team whose investigation into a colleague’s murder pulls them into a much larger conspiracy after they uncover $20 million in cartel cash. Directed by Joe Carnahan, the cast also includes Steven Yeun, Sasha Calle, Teyana Taylor, and Scott Adkins, according to Tom’s Guide.
A Record-Breaking Opening
The Rip made an immediate impact upon its January 16 debut, pulling in 41.6 million views in its first three days on the platform. As ScreenRant reported at the time, that opening ranked as Netflix’s best for an original film since Happy Gilmore 2 drew 46.7 million views the previous July. The film went on to hold Netflix’s global top spot for three consecutive weeks before being overtaken by The Investigation of Lucy Letby.
Climbing the Charts
By mid-February, the film had already surpassed 108 million views, according to Parade, which noted its performance had been aided by generally strong reviews, including a 79% score on Rotten Tomatoes. In a separate report, ScreenRant described the film’s five-week run at the top of Netflix’s charts as a notable early-year record, driven by a mix of star power and positive critical reception.
Affleck and Damon’s Ongoing Collaboration
The Rip marks Affleck and Damon‘s fourth on-screen collaboration, following 2023’s Air and 2021’s The Last Duel, and their first time reuniting since the pair first broke through together decades earlier. Per Yahoo Entertainment, the two are now also set to work together as producers on an upcoming project titled Animals.
Where ‘The Rip’ Stands Now
Crossing 136 million views keeps The Rip solidly within Netflix’s top tier of 2026 releases, alongside other action titles like Apex and Thrash, both of which have also topped 100 million views this year, per MovieWeb’s breakdown of the streamer’s report. With War Machine still holding the top spot, it remains to be seen whether The Rip can close the gap in the back half of the year.
