Deadline broke it Thursday morning, and the casting agents of the internet spent the rest of the day processing: Samara Weaving is Emma Frost.
Marvel Studios’ “X-Men” reboot has found its White Queen. Director Jake Schreier and studio president Kevin Feige spent the better part of the summer meeting with candidates before settling on Weaving earlier this week, The Playlist confirmed, calling the search for Emma Frost “particularly exhaustive.” A source told Deadline that Weaving’s audition was simply too hard to beat — and the decision came down fast once the two of them aligned on their choice.
The timing couldn’t be stranger or more deliberate. Sadie Sink made her debut as Jean Grey inside “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” just 24 hours earlier, and suddenly Marvel’s mutant roster is taking visible shape even though the studio said nothing about the X-Men at Comic-Con a week ago. Weaving would be the third actress to play Emma Frost on film — Tahyna Tozzi had a brief version of the character in “X-Men Origins: Wolverine,” and January Jones played her across “First Class” and “Days of Future Past” — but the first to do so inside the MCU proper, Yahoo Entertainment noted.
The Character She’s Playing
Emma Frost is one of the more interesting casting puzzles in the X-Men lineup. She debuted in Marvel Comics in 1980 as the White Queen of the Hellfire Club — a ruthless, elegant telepath who operated firmly as a villain before spending the following decades evolving into one of the X-Men’s most prominent leaders and teachers, famously stealing Cyclops from Jean Grey during Grant Morrison’s landmark “New X-Men” run, per SlashFilm. She also has a secondary mutation that lets her transform her body into organic diamond, making her nearly indestructible. Whether Schreier’s film positions her as an antagonist, an ally, or something in between hasn’t been revealed.
SlashFilm made the point that Frost carries a sharp, campy sense of humor in the comics that has rarely translated to screen — and that Weaving, who’s been genuinely funny across both “Ready or Not” films and this year’s “Over Your Dead Body,” is unusually well-equipped to handle that dimension of the character. ComicBookMovie added that co-writer Lee Sung Jin has said he’s been working his way through Chris Claremont’s classic X-Men comics from the 1970s through the early ’90s — the era in which Emma first appeared — suggesting the film is drawing from the character’s earliest, most villain-adjacent incarnation.
A Cast Quietly Taking Shape
The broader X-Men roster is filling in piece by piece without any official announcements from Marvel. Beyond Sink’s Jean Grey debut and Weaving’s confirmed casting, Cinelinx reported that Cooper Hoffman, Charles Melton, Cailee Spaeny, and Adam Driver have been rumored for roles, and World of Reel added that “Obsession” breakout Inde Navarrette has expressed interest in playing Mystique, per World of Reel.
Behind the camera, the script has gone through multiple drafts. Aaron Rabin and Zach Dean wrote an earlier version before Michael Lesslie revised it. The current draft is the work of “Beef” creator Lee Sung Jin and “The Bear” co-showrunner Joanna Calo — a pairing that, on paper, suggests something sharper and more character-driven than a typical superhero origin story, per World of Reel. Schreier, who directed last year’s “Thunderbolts,” is confirmed to helm, and Weaving is represented by CAA and 111 Media, Variety noted.
