Taylor Sheridan runs one of the biggest empires in television. On Sunday, he’ll also be acting in it again.
The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Friday that Sheridan is returning as an on-screen cast member in “Lioness” Season 3, which premieres August 2 on Paramount+ — tomorrow. The news didn’t come from a studio announcement. It came from co-star Thad Luckinbill, who plays CIA paramilitary officer Kyle McManus and couldn’t quite contain his enthusiasm when asked about working alongside the man who created the show. “He’s involved. I mean, he has a role, which is great,” Luckinbill told The Hollywood Reporter. “And the show’s better for it when he plays a role.” He added that Sheridan “kills it” in the part and confirmed the two share scenes together this season.
Sheridan had a brief cameo in Season 2 as CIA officer Cody Spears — easy to blink past, easy to miss entirely. This time, according to MEAWW, Luckinbill was careful to distinguish it as something more substantial than a cameo, though both he and Paramount have kept the character details tightly under wraps. Whether Sheridan returns as Cody Spears or takes on a different role altogether hasn’t been confirmed. The smart money is on continuity, but nobody’s saying for certain.
What makes the development interesting is the context around it. Sheridan built his acting career in Hollywood before pivoting to writing and producing, with credits that predate “Sicario” and “Hell or High Water” by more than a decade, Men’s Journal noted. Luckinbill, who also worked alongside him in the 2018 military drama “12 Strong,” described Sheridan’s approach to acting as identical to everything else he does — utterly consistent, no performance behind the performance. “He’s so real,” Luckinbill said. “Whether he’s an actor, writer, director or a producer, he’s still the same guy.”
The broader cast returning for Season 3 is one of Paramount+‘s deepest ensembles: Zoe Saldaña and Nicole Kidman lead again as Joe McNamara and Kaitlyn Meade, both serving as executive producers, alongside Morgan Freeman, Michael Kelly, Laysla De Oliveira, Dave Annable, Jill Wagner, LaMonica Garrett, James Jordan, Genesis Rodriguez, Austin Hébert, Jonah Wharton, Hannah Love Lanier, and Luckinbill himself, per Paramount+. New additions include “Yellowstone” alum Ian Bohen as a by-the-book Delta Force operator and K9 handler named Grady, plus Lev Gorn from “The Americans” and rising star Elizaveta Neretin, ScreenRant confirmed.
The season’s official synopsis promises “hidden networks, foreign operatives, and personal betrayals” converging around Joe and her team, per CBR. Co-star Matt Gerald put it with less corporate polish: “It starts with a bang. It’s nonstop throughout the entirety of the season — and it ends with a bang,” he told AOL. The cast also went through extensive military training ahead of filming, which began in October 2025 and wrapped earlier this year.
