‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Earns Second-Biggest Global Box Office Debut

Sony had been projecting $195 million domestically. The actual number came in at $360 million. Even the people who believed in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” weren’t ready for that.

The fourth Tom Holland Spider-Man film crossed the finish line Monday morning as the biggest domestic opening weekend in box office history, surpassing the seven-year record held by “Avengers: Endgame” — which had opened to $357.1 million in April 2019 and looked, for years, like an immovable benchmark. Add $572 million from 66 international markets and the global total lands at $932 million, the second-biggest worldwide opening of all time, still trailing only “Endgame’s” $1.22 billion debut, Deadline confirmed.

The weekend unfolded as one of the most closely watched box office photo finishes in recent memory. Domestic estimates had fluctuated all Saturday and Sunday, with the gap between “Brand New Day” and “Endgame’s” record shrinking to a matter of millions before Monday’s final tally locked in a $360 million three-day figure and made it official. “Wow! 360 million thank-yous,” Sony Pictures chairman Tom Rothman said Monday morning, per Deadline.

What makes the number more remarkable is what the film didn’t have. “The Odyssey” held the IMAX network’s entire domestic footprint for its third weekend, blocking “Brand New Day” from the largest premium format entirely, Hollywood Reporter noted. The film still broke records for Dolby ($10 million domestically), 4DX ($17 million globally), and ScreenX ($14.4 million globally) — formats that had never seen opening-weekend numbers at that scale, Variety reported.

Internationally, China led with $121 million, followed by the United Kingdom with $49 million, India with $31.8 million, Mexico with $38.3 million, France with $26.6 million, Brazil with $23.8 million, and South Korea with $25 million. Several of those territories set individual market records, per Screen Daily. Combined with “The Odyssey’s” $51 million third-weekend haul — which pushed that film to $721 million worldwide — the two films helped power the highest-earning domestic weekend of all time, totaling roughly $430 million, CNN confirmed.

The result lands at a meaningful moment for Marvel Studios. “Brand New Day’s” success puts real wind behind “Avengers: Doomsday,” arriving this December, which also won’t screen on IMAX when it opens — a logistical constraint that now looks far less alarming given what Spider-Man just managed without it. Box office analyst Chris Colombo told CNN the film was a “perfect storm” — intellectual property, the right character, strong reviews, and a fear-of-missing-out element all arriving at once.

The previous Holland high-water mark was “No Way Home,” which opened to $260.1 million domestically and $587.2 million globally in December 2021 on its way to a $1.9 billion total — a run that at the time seemed impossible to replicate without the multiverse-reunion hook of bringing back Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield, Hollywood Reporter pointed out. “Brand New Day” just did it without any of that. Director Destin Daniel Cretton, who previously held the record for the biggest Labor Day opening weekend with “Shang-Chi,” now holds a different kind of record altogether.
