Eli Roth Discusses His New Horror Film ‘Ice Cream Man’

Eli Roth has a specific answer when people ask what “Ice Cream Man” reminds him of. “A Pee-wee’s Playhouse episode on crack — with blood.” That’s the pitch. The film opens in theaters August 7, and Roth has spent the past week doing press for it in a way that makes clear he’s genuinely excited about this one in a way that feels different from his usual promotional cycle.

The Most Independent Film of His Career

Produced under The Horror Section, the banner Eli Roth launched with Media Capital Technologies in May 2025, Ice Cream Man is being released without an MPAA rating—a decision Roth has consistently said was intentional in recent interviews. The commercial precedent he keeps citing is “Terrifier 3,” which proved an unrated film could succeed theatrically without a studio safety net behind it, IndieWire reported. Going unrated gave Roth room to do things the film couldn’t have done under an NC-17 or even a hard R — and, more importantly, removed any pressure to pull back on the violence to satisfy a ratings board. The film is being released by Iconic Events Releasing, with StudioCanal’s Sixth Dimension handling distribution across France, the UK, and other international territories.

The story is deliberately outrageous. A mysterious ice cream man drives into a quiet summer town and starts handing out frozen treats that turn the children who eat them into something no parent wants to encounter. What follows, Roth told Dread Central, is ninety minutes of gruesome practical effects, zombified kids terrorizing their parents, and kills that he designed to feel completely distinct from one another. He told SYFY Wire that everything he’s made before couldn’t compete with this film’s sheer density of memorable moments — the goal from day one was that every single sequence would land as a highlight, per SYFY Wire.

Spielberg, Troma and the Slow Burn Opening

Two names keep coming up when Roth talks about his influences on the film: Steven Spielberg and Lloyd Kaufman. The Troma comparison is obvious from the premise. The Spielberg comparison is more specific — Roth has spoken about the discipline it takes to hold back, to build a world before letting the chaos in, and to make audiences actually care about the children before the ice cream truck shows up. He told ComingSoon.net the film deliberately delays its first major sequence for roughly eighteen minutes — an eternity by modern horror standards — because he wanted to earn the carnage rather than open with it. IndieWire confirmed Spielberg’s approach to child-centered storytelling was a direct influence on how he framed the film’s first act.

Working With Child Actors on Extreme Material

The most unusual production challenge was also, by Roth’s account, the most enjoyable. The film required dozens of child actors to play fully committed, unhinged killers — and Roth says they needed almost no coaxing. He told WTHR that before shooting he asked each child whether they wanted to be directed as a kid or as an adult, and every single one asked to be treated as a professional. His experience as a summer camp counselor in his teenage years, he said, gave him a way of connecting with large groups of children that made the process feel natural rather than chaotic. The parents were on set throughout, and Roth told WSVN that many of them were horror fans themselves — some were actively encouraging their kids toward more extreme choices. One parent apparently suggested an axe.

    What’s Actually in the Film

Ice Cream Man features Ari Millen as the mysterious titular character, joined by Benjamin Byron Davis, Karen Cliche, Dylan Hawco, and Sarah Abbott in the film’s principal adult ensemble. Roth himself appears in a supporting role. Brandon Roberts composed the score, which Roth has described as one of the film’s secret weapons — an earworm that arrives with the truck and doesn’t leave, by design. The film’s practical effects were created by the production team itself instead of being outsourced, with Roth insisting the kill scenes rely on practical work rather than digital enhancements, according to Wikipedia.

Ice Cream Man arrives in theaters across the country on August 7, 2026.
