Netflix released the official trailer for Blood Sacrifice Monday, putting a full release date behind one of the platform’s most anticipated international thrillers of the summer: all five episodes drop globally on August 20, two weeks from today. The series was previously titled The Case before Netflix rebranded it ahead of this trailer launch, What’s on Netflix reported.
The show comes from George Kay, the British writer behind two of Netflix’s biggest international drama hits — Lupin, the French con-man series that became the platform’s most-watched non-English language show on debut, and Hijack, the real-time hijacking thriller starring Idris Elba that dominated the streamer’s charts in 2023. Kay created, wrote, and produced Blood Sacrifice entirely, giving it a singular creative voice that Netflix has been leaning on to sell the series, ComingSoon.net confirmed.
The story builds outward from those two opening deaths. What starts as a single case quickly becomes a pattern — someone is specifically targeting Stockholm police officers, and the investigation has no obvious leads. Lead detective Thomas Berg, played by Jakob Oftebro (Hamilton, Stenbeck), is the one assigned to find out why. The problem is that the trail keeps leading him toward his estranged father, Alfred Berg — a retired detective played by Peter Andersson (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) — whose own history with the force turns out to be more relevant than either of them would like. Electra Hallman rounds out the principal cast alongside Alexander Abdallah, Henrik Norlén, Magnus Krepper, Irina Björklund, and Anders Mossling, per Netflix’s official series page.
Directing duties went to Kristoffer Nyholm, whose crime drama credits include The Killing and Taboo — two series with a similarly cold, atmospheric visual sensibility that fits neatly inside the Nordic Noir tradition Kay is drawing from. The series was filmed entirely on location in Stockholm and the surrounding archipelago, giving it the specific textures of Sweden in summer that Kay mentioned directly when describing the project. “Setting this story in Stockholm, in that strange, haunting light of the Nordic summer, allowed us to build a crime thriller that feels uniquely Swedish and epic,” he said, per About Netflix.
Producers Johannes Åhlund and Ulf Synnerholm, working through B-Reel Films and Observatory Pictures in association with New Pictures, described the collaboration as a genuine creative partnership built around Kay’s instinct for grounded, emotionally driven storytelling inside genre frameworks, the About Netflix press release noted. That instinct is visible in the trailer, which prioritizes the fractured father-son relationship as the emotional center of the story rather than leaning purely on the procedural mechanics, Yahoo Entertainment observed.
At its core, Kay has said publicly, Blood Sacrifice is a love story wrapped inside a crime thriller — specifically the love between a son who has spent years avoiding his father and a case that makes avoidance impossible, The Killing Times noted. Whether the series earns that framing across five episodes gets answered when it lands globally on August 20, 2026.
