Universal dropped the official trailer Monday morning, confirming the film opens in theaters December 4, 2026. Tommy Wirkola returns to direct from a script by Pat Casey and Josh Miller — the same trio behind the 2022 original — and the full ensemble is stamped with 87North’s fingerprints throughout, the production company behind John Wick, Bullet Train, and Atomic Blonde, FirstShowing confirmed.
The premise picks up directly from where the original left off. Santa’s faith in humanity has collapsed, and with it his magic. Stripped of his powers and exiled to a Silver Bell Mall during the holidays, he takes over the mall Santa job and almost immediately stumbles into a crisis he didn’t plan for — a ruthless crime lord played by Jared Harris has his crew terrorizing the whole community, and the one person in the world capable of stopping them has lost the very thing that makes him dangerous. The biggest new addition is Kristen Bell as Mrs. Claus, who was teased but never seen in the original film. The film carries an R rating for strong and bloody violence alongside language, Vital Thrills confirmed.
Whether Violent Night 2 can replicate what the original did with no existing fanbase and no expectations is a different challenge than what the first film faced. The 2022 movie earned roughly $73 million worldwide against a $25 million budget — a return that made the sequel inevitable but also set a baseline it now has to clear with a property that’s no longer a surprise, Yahoo Entertainment observed. What the trailer suggests is that Wirkola and his team know not to overthink it. The mall is a better playground than the mansion. The villain is more menacing than John Leguizamo’s Mr. Scrooge.
