‘Godzilla Minus Zero’ to World Premiere at New York Film Festival

Three years ago, Takashi Yamazaki walked onto the Oscars stage to collect the Best Visual Effects award for a Godzilla movie made for roughly $15 million — less than the catering budget on some of the blockbusters it beat. The room went wild. Now his sequel is heading to New York.

Film at Lincoln Center announced Tuesday that Godzilla Minus Zero will world premiere as the Spotlight Gala selection of the 64th New York Film Festival on September 26 at Alice Tully Hall, with Yamazaki and members of the cast and crew attending. The film opens in North American theaters November 6 via GKIDS — three days after its Japanese debut on November 3 — and the NYFF slot gives it one of the more prestigious festival landings of the fall season, Variety confirmed.

The sequel picks up two years after Godzilla Minus One, in 1949, continuing the story of the Shikishima family as they face what the festival’s official description calls “an all-new calamity.” Returning cast members include Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Yuki Yamada, Kuranosuke Sasaki, and Sakura Ando, joined by franchise newcomer Min Tanaka, IndieWire reported. Yamazaki again writes, directs, and oversees the visual effects — the same combination that won him that Oscar, making him the first director since Stanley Kubrick to take home the Visual Effects award.

NYFF artistic director Dennis Lim said the selection represents more than simply fulfilling the expectations of a long-running franchise. He praised director Takashi Yamazaki for breathing fresh life into the more than 70-year-old franchise by reconnecting it with its postwar origins. Lim also described Godzilla Minus Zero as “a throwback blockbuster, a showcase for human drama and innovative craft.” Deadline noted. The festival’s own preview language went further, describing the film as delivering “even more astounding effects choreography than its predecessor” while keeping its story at what it called “human eye level.”

Yamazaki’s response to the premiere announcement was characteristically understated. He called it an honor to introduce the film to a global audience for the first time in a venue of such history, and said he was curious — genuinely, not rhetorically — whether the fear at the center of the story would resonate with audiences beyond Japan, The Wrap confirmed.

The context makes that curiosity worth taking seriously. Godzilla Minus One grossed just over $116 million worldwide against its modest budget, became the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film in North American theatrical history, and generated enough cultural momentum to justify a black-and-white re-release titled Godzilla Minus One/Minus Color that performed surprisingly well in its own right, Hollywood Reporter noted. Whether Minus Zero can clear that bar is the central commercial question hanging over the November release.

The 64th New York Film Festival is scheduled to take place from September 25 to October 12.  Also announced for the lineup: James Gray’s Paper Tiger as the opening film, Tony Gilroy’s Behemoth! as the centerpiece, and Ava DuVernay’s documentary 14th closing the festival, per Bloody Disgusting. Godzilla Minus Zero will make its theatrical debut on November 6, 2026.
