The new trailer for “Mutiny” opens with a voice most audiences won’t expect in a Jason Statham movie: Muhammad Ali. Lionsgate spliced audio from Ali’s 1974 pre-fight speech ahead of the “Rumble in the Jungle” into the trailer’s combat sequences, layering the boxer’s declarations over Statham fighting his way through the narrow corridors of a cargo ship, according to Men’s Journal.
The trailer, released this week ahead of the film’s August 21 theatrical debut, gives the fullest look yet at “Mutiny,” which finds Statham playing Cole Reed, a former Special Forces operative and NYPD officer turned private security consultant, according to EnStarz. After witnessing his billionaire boss’s murder, Reed is framed for the crime and boards a cargo ship to track down the real killer, only to stumble into a much larger conspiracy involving human traffickers, per MovieWeb. At one point in the footage, Statham delivers the film’s closest thing to a mission statement: “I need to finish this,” MovieWeb reported.
Jean-François Richet directs from a script by Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis, and the story leans into a tightly confined setting. Sortiraparis described the film as a claustrophobic survival thriller, built around a hunted man with almost nowhere to run across the ship’s decks and machinery spaces.
Annabelle Wallis, Roland Møller, Jason Wong, Adrian Lester, and Arnas Fedaravičius round out the cast, according to Flickering Myth, with Møller reportedly playing the film’s primary antagonist. Statham also produces through Punch Palace Productions, the company he runs with longtime partner Steve Chasman, alongside Marc Butan of MadRiver Pictures, per Yahoo.
“Mutiny” wasn’t originally scheduled for late summer. TheMovieBlog noted the film was first dated for January 2026 before Lionsgate pushed it back, ultimately landing on August 21 in the U.S. and August 19 in France, according to Sortiraparis. The R-rated thriller marks Statham’s second theatrical release of the year, following January’s “Shelter,” and the ninth feature directed by Richet, according to Yahoo.
