‘Spider-Man: Brand New Day’ Sets a Major New Box Office Record

Spider-Man just keeps swinging past the competition. “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” is set to cross $700 million at the domestic box office Wednesday, doing so in less than three weeks — a pace that has box office watchers seriously discussing whether it could become the first movie in history to cross $1 billion domestically, according to Screen Rant.

That would be a genuinely unprecedented feat. The current all-time domestic record belongs to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” which finished its 2015 run with $936.6 million. No film has ever crossed the billion-dollar mark on North American ticket sales alone.

It’s the latest in a run of records that started the moment the film opened. Sony and Marvel’s Tom Holland sequel debuted to $360 million domestically, edging past “Avengers: Endgame’s” $357.1 million to claim the biggest opening weekend in box office history, while its $932 million global bow ranked as the second-largest ever, trailing only “Endgame’s” $1.2 billion start, according to CNBC.

The film didn’t slow down from there. It set new records for the biggest Monday ($46 million, topping “Black Panther’s” $40 million) and biggest Tuesday ($42 million, topping “Spider-Man: Far From Home’s” $39.2 million), before becoming the fastest movie ever to cross $500 million domestically, doing it in seven days, a full day faster than “Endgame,” per Deadline.

By its second weekend, “Brand New Day” had grossed $145 million, the third-biggest sophomore frame of all time behind “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” ($149.2 million) and “Endgame” ($147.3 million), pushing its 10-day domestic total to $655 million, the highest ten-day domestic haul any movie has ever recorded, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Internationally, the film crossed $1 billion in 12 days, the second-fastest movie ever to do so behind “Endgame’s” five-day sprint. That put its global total at $1.67 billion, making it the 12th-highest-grossing movie of all time and the biggest movie of 2026 so far, according to Variety. It’s now within range of $2 billion worldwide, a milestone only seven other films have ever reached, among them “Avatar,” “Titanic” and “Endgame” itself, as MovieWeb notes.

The rollout has broken records well beyond North America. AMC Theatres reported its biggest global weekend ever, both in ticket sales and concessions, with 10.2 million admissions across its circuit, while “Brand New Day” set all-time opening records in more than a dozen countries, including France, India, Brazil and Saudi Arabia, according to Forbes.

Reviews have kept pace with the numbers. The film holds a 90% critics’ score and a 98% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, along with an A CinemaScore, suggesting word of mouth isn’t likely to slow its momentum anytime soon.

Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton and starring Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo, “Brand New Day” is the 38th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the last solo outing before next year’s “Avengers: Doomsday.” Made on a reported $225 million budget, it cleared its estimated break-even point of roughly $562.5 million within its first ten days, meaning everything since has been pure upside for Sony and Marvel.
