“Only Murders in the Building” Officially Renewed for Season 6, Confirms Major Tradition Break

Nearly a year after Hulu confirmed “Only Murders in the Building” would return for a sixth season, the shape of that season has finally come into full focus, and it looks nothing like the five that came before it. The show’s signature setting, the Arconia, the Upper West Side building that’s anchored every prior season, won’t appear at all this time. Season 6 will be filmed and set entirely in London, the first fully international season in the show’s run, a shift AnimeNextSeason describes as breaking a tradition the series maintained even during Season 4’s brief detour to Los Angeles, since that season still kept New York as its narrative home base.

Hulu announced the renewal itself on October 28, 2025, the same day Season 5’s finale aired, a same-day turnaround Deadline has tracked as a signal of just how much confidence the network has in the series. Co-creator and executive producer John Hoffman told the trade that the London setting would put the show’s core trio in unfamiliar territory, describing London as New York’s sister city while promising the trio will be “fish in new waters” once the story moves across the Atlantic.

The mystery driving the London relocation traces directly back to Season 5’s closing minutes. In the finale, Tina Fey’s recurring rival podcaster, Cinda Canning, is found dead outside the Arconia after returning from an investigation into a red-haired royal descendant in the UK, a cliffhanger Variety confirmed sets up the entire premise for Season 6. Hoffman has leaned into the shift enthusiastically, describing England as “fertile ground” for the kind of classic mystery storytelling associated with Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle, according to Screen Rant’s breakdown of his comments. Fey’s Canning has been part of the show’s fabric since its first season, when her true-crime podcast originally brought Charles, Oliver and Mabel together, a through-line Screen Rant traced across the character’s recurring appearances in seasons one, two, three and five.

Steve Martin, Martin Short and Selena Gomez all return as the central trio, joined by a British and Irish cast that’s grown substantially since the initial announcement. David Tennant, Nicola Coughlan, Jodie Whittaker, Jim Broadbent, Richard Ayoade, Adrian Lukis and Kathryn Hunter have all signed on, according to a cast rundown from Deadline’s ongoing coverage hub, with production having since been spotted filming around London, TVInsider reports in its own recent update on the season. Hulu has confirmed the season will run ten episodes, though a specific premiere date has not yet been announced.

Before the London setting was locked in, the show’s future had briefly been an open question. As recently as the weeks before Season 5’s finale, IMDb reported the series had not yet been renewed, with cast members publicly hoping for more seasons without any confirmation from Hulu. That uncertainty evaporated the moment the renewal came through, with Hoffman teasing even then that “nothing is at its end” for the franchise, comments Yahoo carried shortly after the announcement.

Martin and Hoffman co-created the series, with Short, Gomez, Dan Fogelman, Jess Rosenthal, Ben Smith and JJ Philbin also serving as executive producers. Since its quiet debut in August 2021, “Only Murders in the Building” has become one of Hulu’s signature originals, and its move to London marks the biggest structural swing the show has taken in five seasons.
