Netflix’s “Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory” Sets 2027 Theatrical Window With Star-Studded Cast

Willy Wonka is heading back to the big screen, but this time by way of Netflix rather than a traditional studio. The streamer confirmed this week that its animated film “Charlie vs. The film will make its worldwide theatrical debut on November 5, 2027, before becoming available on the platform on December 22. The Hollywood Reporter also confirmed the movie’s complete voice cast as part of the announcement.

Taika Waititi voices Willy Wonka, years after his factory’s Golden Ticket contest ended with him behind bars for turning a child into a blueberry. Kit Connor voices Charlie Paley, a new character rather than the franchise’s original Charlie Bucket, leading a group of teens who plot to break into Wonka’s factory and steal a priceless chocolate bar to save their families from eviction, a plot ScreenCrush laid out from Netflix’s official synopsis. Nicola Coughlan, Charithra Chandran, Samson Kayo and Christopher Chung round out the voice cast, joined by Kate Winslet and Helena Bonham Carter, the latter returning to the Wonka universe after playing Mrs. Bucket in Tim Burton’s 2005 adaptation.

Jared Stern and Elaine Bogan direct, working from Netflix Animation Studios with Sony Pictures Imageworks handling the animation itself. Both directors said in a statement carried by Animation World Network that it’s “a privilege to bring his continued adventures to life as twisted adults.” Kit Connor described being drawn in by the project’s early concept art and creative vision in comments posted to Netflix’s Tudum site, where the streamer also confirmed Will Sharpe and Stephanie Hsu round out the cast.

The release marks a notable shift for a streamer that has historically kept its biggest titles off theater screens entirely. IndieWire counts it as Netflix’s third exclusive theatrical release within a twelve-month span, following David Fincher’s untitled continuation of “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” which opens in late November, and Greta Gerwig’s “Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew,” pushed from its original Thanksgiving slot to February 2027 to secure a longer IMAX run. World of Reel reports the “Chocolate Factory” release will run more than 45 days exclusively in theaters, putting it roughly in line with the windows secured for those other two titles.

Analysts see the pattern as more than a one-off. Cinemadrame points to the moves as a signal to top-tier filmmakers, Gerwig and Fincher among them, that Netflix has grown more willing to accommodate traditional theatrical runs when a project calls for it, even if executives maintain there’s been no formal change in overall strategy. Whether that flexibility continues past 2027 remains an open question, but for now, three major theatrical releases in a single year is more than Netflix has offered audiences in any prior year of its history.

The animated feature comes several years after Netflix acquired the Roald Dahl Story Company for a reported $500 million, giving the streamer control over the author’s full catalog and setting up further Wonka-adjacent projects, including a reality competition series loosely based on the original story that the company announced separately last year, according to MovieWeb’s coverage of the studio’s broader Dahl strategy.
