Marvel Officially Drops ‘VisionQuest’ Trailer: James Spader and Paul Bettany Reunite for ‘WandaVision’ Trilogy Finale

Marvel Television finally let the public see “VisionQuest” on Friday night, ending a wait that started with a private screening at New York Comic Con roughly ten months ago and had gone unresolved since. Paul Bettany and James Spader took the stage together at D23’s Disney Entertainment Showcase to debut the trailer in person, joined by Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, footage Cosmic Book News confirms had been sitting finished and unseen by the public since last fall.

The eight-episode series, premiering October 14 exclusively on Disney+, closes out what Marvel Television now frames as a trilogy: 2021’s “WandaVision,” followed by 2024’s “Agatha All Along,” and now “VisionQuest” as the capstone, according to Marvel.com’s own recap of the panel. Bettany reflected on the character’s long arc before the trailer rolled, telling the crowd it had been “an enormous joy playing the Vision as he’s evolved over the years,” a synthezoid who’s been an Avenger, a father, and someone who has died multiple times in ways that complicate long-term financial planning, he joked.

The footage itself picks up with Vision in hiding, having escaped whoever last tried to weaponize him, and searching for meaning by consulting the various AI personalities embedded in his own programming, a premise BroadwayWorld laid out from the trailer’s opening stretch. That search puts him face to face with familiar digital voices: Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., James D’Arcy reprising J.A.R.V.I.S. from “Agent Carter,” and T’Nia Miller as Jocasta, according to a full character breakdown from GeekTyrant. Ruaridh Mollica plays a grown-up Tommy Maximoff, Wanda’s son, while Todd Stashwick joins as a morally ambiguous mercenary named Paladin.

Spader’s Ultron gets pulled back in too, sparring with Vision in a tense reunion the trailer plays partly for dark comedy. At one point Vision, questioned about “that redhead,” a clear nod to Wanda, admits he still wears Vision’s face “but not his virtue,” one of the trailer’s more pointed exchanges, per the outlet’s account of the footage. Deadline notes the cast also includes Faran Tahir, reprising his role as Raz from the very first “Iron Man” film, tying the new series back to the franchise’s earliest days. The trailer closes on Vision reverting to his android form and departing for what he calls home, a place that, as Variety describes it, exists in a separate universe inside his own head.

Terry Matalas serves as showrunner, directing alongside Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro and Vincenzo Natali, from a script he co-wrote with Cindy Appel, Christopher Monfette, Nicole Falsetti and Matthew Okumura, a credits list The Arts Shelf confirmed following the panel. Before Friday, almost nothing about the show’s premise had been public, with Marvel keeping even basic plot details under wraps for months, Nerdist notes, leaving fans to piece together expectations from a cast list alone.

The premiere marks Bettany’s first live-action Marvel role since “WandaVision” ended in 2021, a full-circle moment for a character whose death in “Avengers: Infinity War” once looked permanent. “VisionQuest” arrives on Disney+ October 14.
