Jordan Downey Returns With New Horror Film ‘The Cycle’

A man vanishes for 36 years. Then his body turns up at the scene of a horrific crime, and it falls to the daughter he left behind to figure out why. This premise fuels The Cycle, the new horror-thriller directed by Jordan Downey. Shudder confirmed this week that the film will premiere on October 23, according to Rue Morgue.

    Two Years in the Making

Production on the project has been progressing quietly since 2024. Deborah Ann Woll’s casting was first reported that May, according to Fangoria, and by that fall, the crew was scouting locations around Astoria, Oregon, where the film was ultimately shot. Producer James Harris said early on that Downey had put together an original story built to excite audiences, according to Bloody Disgusting, a level of confidence that helped keep the project moving even without a firm release date attached for most of its development.

    What’s Coming to Shudder

Downey wrote the script alongside Kevin Stewart, and the new trailer signals something stranger than a standard cold-case drama — early footage points toward a supernatural thread running underneath the crime-scene mystery, with the daughter’s search for answers framed less like an investigation and more like a nightmare she can’t wake up from, according to Punch Drunk Critics. Dread Central noted the film continues a run of atmospheric, mystery-driven work that’s become something of a signature for Downey.

    The Team Behind It

Woll, known for playing Jessica Hamby on “True Blood” and Karen Page in Marvel’s “Daredevil,” leads the cast as the estranged daughter, opposite Jeffrey Donovan of “Burn Notice.” Will Hochman, Jack Doolan, Carl W. Crudup, Jeb Berrier, Gretchen Corbett, and David Myers Gregory round out the supporting ensemble, according to Bloody Disgusting. Harris produces through his Tea Shop banner, alongside Peter Heller and Michael Downey.

It’s a notable step up in scale for Downey, whose breakout feature, “The Head Hunter,” was made for just $30,000 before premiering at the Sitges Film Festival in 2018 and eventually earning roughly $380,000 at the box office once it found a wider audience on Shudder, according to Wikipedia. He later directed a segment for the horror anthology “V/H/S/Beyond,” but “The Cycle” marks his first full feature since “The Head Hunter” itself — and it won’t be his last for long. A sci-fi thriller called “Override” is already in the works as his next project, according to Bloody Disgusting.

“The Cycle” streams exclusively on Shudder starting October 23, 2026.
