Matt Damon Reveals New Details About His Mystery Project With the Daniels

Hanry DawsonBy Hanry DawsonJuly 24, 2026 News

Matt Damon has finally shared the first concrete details about his upcoming untitled film with the Daniels, the Oscar-winning directing duo behind Everything Everywhere All at Once. In a recent interview, Damon described the project’s wild creative pitch in unusually specific terms. They pitched it to me as a mix of ‘The Breakfast Club,’ ‘Inception,’ an anime film, and an unaired episode of ‘The John Oliver Show.’ he said, according to a report from TheWrap.

The comment marks the first time Damon has publicly discussed the secretive Universal Pictures project since news of his involvement broke earlier this year.

    Project Background

The film is the follow-up feature from Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as the Daniels. After the critical and commercial success of Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022, the pair signed a deal to develop a large-scale original “event” film at Universal. Damon entered talks to star in the project in May 2026, shortly after completing promotional work on his upcoming film The Odyssey. Deadline first reported that the actor had given the green light following a meeting with the directors. Production is set to begin in Los Angeles later this summer.

    Cast Updates

The ensemble continues to grow. Charles Melton has officially joined the cast opposite Damon, as confirmed by both Variety and Deadline. Sandra Oh is also in advanced talks to co-star, according to earlier reporting from Deadline. A younger supporting ensemble has been added as well, including Silvia Dionicio, Jackson Kelly, Kerrice Brooks, and Thalia Dudek. Ryan Gosling was previously attached to the film but left due to scheduling conflicts.

What Is Known About the Story

Specific plot details remain tightly guarded. Earlier reports indicated the story involves global warming, time travel, dual timelines (one set in the 1980s and another in the present), and a possible superhero element. Damon’s recent description of the pitch suggests the finished film will blend high-concept science fiction with coming-of-age character work and satirical comedy. The Daniels have a reputation for mixing seemingly incompatible tones and ideas into cohesive, emotionally resonant stories. Their approach on this project appears consistent with that style.

    Release Plans

Universal has dated the untitled film for theatrical release on November 19, 2027. The schedule allows the production roughly a year for filming and post-production once cameras start rolling this summer. Additional coverage of the casting and production timeline has appeared on The Playlist and JoBlo.

Damon’s decision to take on the role so soon after The Odyssey signals strong confidence in the Daniels’ vision. For audiences who connected with the inventive spirit of Everything Everywhere All at Once, the combination of Damon’s grounded star power and the directors’ boundary-pushing style already makes this one of the more intriguing original projects on the 2027 calendar.
