Sacha Baron Cohen has officially wrapped production on a brand new Ali G movie, bringing back one of his most iconic characters after more than two decades.
The news first broke on July 7, 2026, when entertainment journalist Jeff Sneider reported that Cohen had completed filming on the secret project. Major outlets including Variety and Deadline quickly confirmed the story.
A Surprise Return for the Original Character
Ali G first rose to fame in the early 2000s through Da Ali G Show, where the dim-witted, tracksuit-wearing “journalist” from Staines hilariously interviewed politicians, celebrities, and academics. He later starred in the 2002 feature film Ali G Indahouse, which performed well in the UK but didn’t receive a wide release in the United States.
While Cohen went on to achieve massive global success with Borat (2006), Brüno (2009), and Borat Subsequent Moviefilm (2020), Ali G remained largely dormant — aside from a brief appearance at the 2016 Oscars. Now, it appears Cohen is returning to the character that started it all.
Shot in Secret, Just Like Borat
Much like the Borat films, this new Ali G project was filmed quietly to preserve the element of surprise. Reports indicate Cohen was spotted in character in Oxfordshire, England, as early as 2025, but very little information leaked until now. According to The A.V. Club, Cohen has taken his yellow FUBU tracksuit out of storage for a surprise sequel to the original film. A representative for Sacha Baron Cohen declined to comment when contacted by the media.
Why This Matters

Cohen has spent recent years taking on more dramatic roles, including his Oscar-nominated performance in The Trial of the Chicago Seven. However, he has also continued releasing broad comedies. Bringing back Ali G could mark a return to the kind of provocative, boundary-pushing satire that made him famous in the first place.
Empire Online noted that Cohen had previously downplayed rumors of an Ali G return while promoting his Netflix film Ladies First, only for news of the completed movie to emerge shortly after.
What We Know So Far
At this point, almost nothing is confirmed about the plot or tone of the new film. It remains unclear whether it will follow the mockumentary style of the Borat movies or return to the more scripted comedy format of the original Ali G Indahouse.
Consequence reported that the film was likely shot with the same secretive approach Cohen used for his previous hidden-camera projects, allowing him to catch unsuspecting targets off guard.
What Happens Next?
As of now, there is still no official title, release date, distributor, or streaming platform attached to the project. MovieWeb suggests that Cohen and his team may still be in the process of finding the right home for the film.
Given the strong performance of Borat Subsequent Moviefilm on streaming, many expect a major platform could eventually pick it up.
