After more than 14 years, the stoner comedy franchise is officially getting a fourth installment. Harold & Kumar 4 is now in active development, with original stars John Cho and Kal Penn expected to reprise their iconic roles. According to a recent update from producer Greg Shapiro, the project is moving forward, with the screenplay currently being written and hopes of starting production soon.
Franchise Creators Return to Direct
The new film will be written by Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald. Hurwitz and Schlossberg, who wrote the original Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle (2004), will also direct the fourth movie. This marks a full-circle moment for the duo, who made their directorial debut with the second film, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008). The project is being developed at Lionsgate’s Mandate Pictures, the same studio behind the original trilogy.
John Cho and Kal Penn Expected to Return
John Cho and Kal Penn are set to return as Harold Lee and Kumar Patel. While no official deals have been signed yet, both actors have previously expressed strong interest in continuing the series. In a 2020 interview, Kal Penn told Variety that he and John Cho regularly text about making another movie. More recently, Kal Penn shared an optimistic update on Jimmy Kimmel Live!, confirming that he has already seen the outline for the new film and is excited about the direction it’s taking.
What We Know So Far
The film is still in the early stages, with the focus currently on finishing the screenplay. Producer Greg Shapiro recently told Variety that “everybody’s back” — referring to the cast, writers, and directors — and that they are aiming to begin shooting as soon as the pieces come together. It remains unclear whether Neil Patrick Harris will return in his memorable recurring role as a fictionalized version of himself.
A Long-Awaited Comeback
The Harold & Kumar series began with the cult classic Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle in 2004, followed by Escape from Guantanamo Bay (2008) and A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas (2011). The films became known for their raunchy humor, heartfelt friendship, and absurd adventures.

ScreenRant noted that fans have been waiting for over a decade for a proper continuation, and the involvement of the original creators has generated significant excitement online.
What’s Next?
With the screenplay now in progress and key creatives locked in, Harold & Kumar 4 appears to be moving steadily toward production. While no release date has been announced, the project is one of the more promising comedy revivals currently in development.
