Matt Damon has revealed that working with acclaimed Indian filmmaker Shekhar Kapur remains an unfulfilled ambition more than two decades after the actor missed the opportunity to appear in The Four Feathers.
The Hollywood star discussed Kapur while attending a press conference in Mumbai on July 11, 2026, as part of the promotional campaign for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey. When Damon was asked to name an Indian filmmaker he would like to work with, he pointed to Kapur and recalled the project that did not work out earlier in his career.
According to India Today’s report from the Mumbai event, Damon said Kapur had remained on his list of directors for years. He described the missed collaboration as a “20-year-old debt” that he had continued to carry with him.

Kapur directed the 2002 historical drama The Four Feathers, which ultimately starred Heath Ledger as British officer Harry Faversham. Damon recalled being disappointed that he was unable to take part in the project.
While discussing why the collaboration did not happen, Damon suggested that he was probably already committed to a Jason Bourne film at the time. His wording indicated that he was recalling events from more than two decades ago rather than providing a detailed account of the scheduling conflict.
The actor nevertheless made it clear that his interest in working with Kapur has not disappeared. Damon said he would welcome another opportunity to collaborate with the filmmaker, whose international work includes Elizabeth, Elizabeth: The Golden Age and The Four Feathers.
The original opportunity came during an important period in Damon’s career. The Bourne Identity was released in 2002, the same year as The Four Feathers, and established the actor as the face of a successful action franchise.
Shekhar Kapur Responds to Matt Damon’s Comments
Kapur has responded positively to Damon’s public expression of admiration.
In comments given to NDTV following the Mumbai press conference, the filmmaker praised Damon’s emotional range and said he would be eager to collaborate with him. Kapur referenced Damon’s performance opposite Robin Williams in Good Will Hunting while explaining his respect for the actor.
The exchange confirms that the professional admiration is mutual. So far, Damon and Kapur have not confirmed any particular project, screenplay, filming timeline, or official collaboration.
For now, their comments should be viewed as an expression of interest rather than confirmation that a project is moving forward.
Damon Is Promoting Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey
Damon made the remarks while promoting The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s large-scale adaptation of Homer’s ancient Greek epic.

The official trailer released by Universal Pictures lists Damon, Holland, Hathaway, Pattinson, Nyong’o, Zendaya and Theron among the principal cast members. It also describes the production as the first cinematic adaptation to bring Homer’s foundational saga to IMAX film screens on this scale.
Damon’s comments about Kapur therefore emerged during one of the most visible promotional periods of his career, as he prepares to lead another major film from Nolan following supporting appearances in Interstellar and Oppenheimer.

The enthusiasm expressed by both men has naturally created interest in a possible future collaboration. Damon has publicly identified Kapur as a director he has wanted to work with for years, while Kapur has responded by praising the actor and welcoming the possibility.
