Back in 2021, “Spider-Man: No Way Home” slipped in a line fans immediately treated as a promise: Jamie Foxx’s Electro musing that there’s “bound to be a Black Spider-Man” out there somewhere. Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has now confirmed that promise is real. Miles Morales is coming to the MCU in live action — just not yet.
Feige made the comments during a visit to Shanghai, in an interview with China’s Watching Hollywood, saying Marvel “definitely” has plans for a live-action Miles and describing his eventual arrival as something close to inevitable for the franchise, according to SuperHeroHype. He confirmed the Electro line had, in fact, been an intentional nod toward the character, per SuperHeroHype. The remarks were also picked up within hours by Deadline, ComicBook.com, and other outlets.
There’s a catch on timing, though: Feige tied Miles’ live-action debut to the conclusion of Sony’s animated Spider-Verse trilogy, which wraps with “Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse,” currently dated for June 18, 2027, according to ComicBasics. That film has reportedly gone through a difficult production stretch, which ComicBasics noted could still put pressure on the release date.
Why the Wait
Marvel appears to be avoiding a situation where two different screen versions of the same character exist at once. With the MCU aiming for a more streamlined footing after “Secret Wars,” ComicBook.com pointed out that introducing a live-action Miles before the animated trilogy finishes could muddy the character’s identity — not unlike the tangle DC Studios currently faces with multiple live-action Batmen running in parallel.
Feige’s comments came alongside broader remarks about where the Spider-Man franchise goes next. He said producer Amy Pascal is already mapping out several future films with him, according to Deadline. Pascal herself hinted at a live-action Miles project back in 2023, telling Variety at the time that it was “all happening,” Deadline noted.
Where Miles Stands Now
Miles Morales first hit theaters in 2018’s “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” with Shameik Moore voicing the character again in 2023’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.” Moore returns once more for “Beyond the Spider-Verse,” which finds Miles stranded in an alternate universe as he tries to find his way home, according to Cosmic Book News.
The confirmation lands the same week Tom Holland’s Peter Parker returns to theaters in “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” his fourth solo outing, opening July 30, according to ComingSoon.net. For now, Marvel and Sony appear content to let the animated and live-action versions of Miles Morales exist on separate tracks — with the live-action one still roughly two years out, per AOL.
