Marvel Confirms S.H.I.E.L.D.’s Return in New Captain America Comic

Hanry DawsonBy Hanry DawsonJuly 24, 2026 Screen Daily Voice

Marvel Comics has officially confirmed the return of S.H.I.E.L.D. in the ongoing Captain America series. The long-absent organization reappears in Captain America #6, written by Chip Zdarsky with art by Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar. The issue went on sale January 21, 2026, and marks the start of a new storyline billed as the beginning of the “Road to Armageddon.”

According to the official announcement from Marvel, the return was first revealed by Editor-in-Chief C.B. Cebulski and writer Chip Zdarsky at the Lucca Comics & Games festival in late 2025. Cebulski stated that the idea of restoring S.H.I.E.L.D. had come up at nearly every creative retreat since the organization was disbanded almost a decade earlier. He noted that the timing aligned with the 60th anniversary of S.H.I.E.L.D.’s debut in Strange Tales #135 in 1965.

S.H.I.E.L.D. has been largely absent from Marvel Comics continuity since the events of Secret Empire in 2017, when the agency was compromised and dissolved following Hydra’s takeover. ScreenRant, reports that the choice to bring it back marked a deliberate shift in direction for Zdarsky’s Captain America run. Earlier plans for the arc involving an international team of super-soldier captains were set aside in favor of this development.

The new version of S.H.I.E.L.D. is smaller, leaner, and more covert than previous iterations. It is led by Nick Fury Jr. and operates with a reduced scope and a new mandate. In the story, Captain America (Steve Rogers) is deployed to Latveria in the aftermath of the One World Under Doom event. Doctor Doom’s fall has left the country on the brink of civil war, complicated by an incursion involving Thunderbolt Ross. Rogers is tasked with protecting civilians and investigating reports of a weapons stockpile left behind by Doom.

When Nick Fury Jr.’s newly reformed S.H.I.E.L.D. joins the mission, the two sides do not fully align. ScreenRant’s coverage of the issue details that the agency’s agents include Joe Ramos, Charles Castlemore, Trevor Tambling, and the Red Widow. Their priorities appear more focused on securing Doom’s advanced technology than on pure peacekeeping, creating potential tension with Captain America.

CBR confirmed the return shortly after the announcement, noting that the storyline is positioned as a key chapter leading into Marvel’s larger Armageddon event planned for summer 2026. Zdarsky has described the reintroduction of S.H.I.E.L.D. as a chance to explore human ingenuity and fortitude in a dangerous world, with the agency starting small but holding bigger plans for the future.

ComicBook.com reported that the new S.H.I.E.L.D. may not function as a straightforward ally. Early details suggest the organization arrives with its own agenda in Latveria, raising questions about trust after years of absence and previous scandals. A follow-up analysis from ScreenRant further examined how the return fits into the post-One World Under Doom landscape and the broader status quo shift for the Marvel Universe.

Additional context from CBR’s review of the issue highlights that the story continues to explore the long shadow of Secret Empire while establishing a new status quo for both Steve Rogers and the reformed intelligence agency. Covers and character designs for the arc were provided by Valerio Schiti, with additional promotional art by Delio Diaz and Frank Alpizar.

The return of S.H.I.E.L.D. after nearly a decade represents one of the more significant organizational shifts in recent Marvel Comics continuity. Captain America #6 and the issues that follow will determine how this smaller, more secretive version of the agency operates and what role it plays in the events leading toward Armageddon.
