‘House of the Dragon’ Episode 8 Preview Released by HBO Max

Season 3 of “House of the Dragon” has been the show’s most action-packed run yet, and HBO is not letting it go out quietly. The network released the official preview for Episode 8 on Sunday, giving viewers their first look at what the Season 3 finale has in store when it arrives next week.

The preview opens with unsettling news reaching Rhaenyra about Aegon’s movements, followed by Daemon urging someone toward a major decision. “You have an absolute power within your grasp,” he says. From there the footage moves through large-scale confrontations, dragon fire, and what appears to be the war between the Targaryen and Hightower factions finally reaching its peak, AOL confirmed. The battle of Tumbleton, which fans of George R.R. Martin’s source material have been anticipating all season, appears to be the episode’s centerpiece, per ComicBasics.

    When and Where to Watch

Episode 8 airs Sunday, August 9 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max simultaneously. UK audiences get the episode one day later on August 10, continuing the pattern that has applied to every episode this season, per Fiction Horizon. The episode was written by showrunner Ryan Condal and Ti Mikkel, with Andrij Parekh directing — the same pairing behind the Season 3 premiere, according to the Wiki of Westeros.

What the Finale Needs to Resolve

Episode 7, which aired last night, left several storylines deliberately open. Alicent’s sudden departure from Harrenhal after a tense confrontation with Aemond was the night’s most discussed moment, and Winter is Coming noted that fan speculation about Alys Rivers’ involvement in whatever comes next has been running high since the credits rolled.

Not everything will wrap up neatly. ComicBasics reported that some storylines — including the political fallout known in the source material as the Hour of the Wolf — may be held for Season 4 rather than resolved on Sunday. That creates real pressure on the finale. HBO is currently targeting 2028 for the show’s fourth and concluding season, meaning whatever Episode 8 delivers will need to sustain audience interest across a roughly two-year wait.

Forbes has consistently called this season a significant improvement over Season 3, pointing to a run of strong episodes that kept momentum through the full eight-week stretch. ComingSoon.net put it simply: the Dance of the Dragons is reaching its breaking point, and the finale is where it lands.

“House of the Dragon” Season 3, Episode 8 premieres Sunday, August 9 at 9 p.m. ET on HBO and HBO Max.
