Game of Thrones Returns: HBO Confirms a New Chapter for the Franchise

Hanry DawsonBy Hanry DawsonJuly 12, 2026 TV Shows

HBO’s Game of Thrones universe is entering its most active period yet, with the network and Warner Bros. confirming a wave of new projects spanning television, film, and even the stage. Speaking after the Emmys, HBO chief content officer Casey Bloys confirmed that 2026 will be the most prolific year in the franchise’s history, according to IMDb.

House of the Dragon Season 3 Is Underway

House of the Dragon Season 3 premiered on June 21, 2026, and is airing new episodes weekly on HBO and HBO Max through a finale on August 9. The season draws from George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, beginning with the Battle of the Gullet as the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons intensifies between the rival factions of Team Black and Team Green, according to Collider. A fourth season has already been confirmed and is expected to arrive in 2028, with showrunner Ryan Condal set to close out the series at that point.

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Heads Into Season 2

The franchise’s other current series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, debuted its first season on January 18, 2026, adapting Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight. The show followed the mismatched pairing of hedge knight Dunk and his squire Egg — secretly a future Targaryen king — and drew strong reviews along with some of the highest viewership numbers in the franchise’s recent history, per ScreenRant. HBO has renewed the series for a second season, based on the follow-up novella The Sworn Sword, expected in 2027.

The Franchise’s First Movie: Aegon’s Conquest

The biggest expansion news came at CinemaCon 2026, where Warner Bros. officially confirmed the franchise’s first theatrical film, titled Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest. The film will adapt material from Fire & Blood centered on Aegon I Targaryen’s conquest of Westeros and the forging of the Iron Throne. Andor and House of Cards writer Beau Willimon has been attached to pen the screenplay, according to Variety and Deadline. The project appears on Warner Bros.’ “2027 and beyond” release slate, and no casting or director announcements have been made yet, as noted by MovieWeb.

    More Expansion Still in Development

Beyond the confirmed projects, HBO has several other Game of Thrones spinoffs at earlier stages. Ten Thousand Ships, a prequel centered on the warrior princess Nymeria, is in active development with a new pilot script. Separately, after HBO shelved its planned Jon Snow sequel series, the network has reportedly shifted focus toward a new Arya Stark-centered project, with some reports suggesting the character could return to the franchise, according to GamesRadar+.

The franchise has also moved beyond the screen entirely: the Royal Shakespeare Company is staging Game of Thrones: The Mad King, a play dramatizing the final years of King Aerys II Targaryen’s reign, running in Stratford-upon-Avon from July 20 through September 5, 2026.

    What It Means for Fans

Between an ongoing prequel series, a newly renewed second show, a first feature film, and multiple projects still taking shape, HBO’s Westeros universe shows no sign of slowing down. With House of the Dragon Season 3 currently in production and Aegon’s Conquest still a few years away from debuting, the franchise’s “new era” is actually a collection of different stories developing simultaneously. This continued expansion highlights Game of Thrones as one of the rare television franchises that has successfully maintained momentum across multiple platforms years after the original series concluded.
