Jim Carrey Confirmed to Lead Live-Action “The Jetsons Movie”

George Jetson finally has a face, and it’s Jim Carrey’s.

Warner Bros. Discovery slipped the confirmation into its second-quarter 2026 shareholder letter rather than making a formal announcement — a live-action “Jetsons” film starring Carrey is officially part of the studio’s release slate, positioned for sometime “beyond 2027.” It’s a quiet way to confirm what the trades had been reporting for close to a year, but per MovieWeb, it’s also the first time Warner Bros. itself has attached Carrey’s name to the project on paper.

Interestingly, the letter doesn’t mention a director. Colin Trevorrow, the “Jurassic World Dominion” filmmaker who was reported last October as in talks to helm the film alongside Carrey’s casting, isn’t named anywhere in the studio’s slate description. That doesn’t necessarily mean he’s off the project — it just means his attachment currently rests entirely on last year’s trade reporting rather than anything Warner Bros. has confirmed itself.

That original October 2025 report came from multiple outlets at once. Deadline, Variety and TheWrap all reported around the same time that Carrey was circling the role of George Jetson, with Trevorrow directing and co-writing alongside “The Idol” showrunner Joe Epstein. No plot details ever came with those reports, and Warner Bros. offered no comment at the time.

The casting matters partly because of where Carrey’s career has been. He told Access Hollywood in 2022, while doing press for “Sonic the Hedgehog 2,” that he was “fairly serious” about walking away from acting — and he mostly did, staying off screen for roughly two years before returning as Dr. Robotnik in last year’s “Sonic the Hedgehog 3.” Outside of the “Sonic” franchise, a Jetsons lead would be Carrey’s biggest role in years.

As for the property itself: Hanna-Barbera’s original “Jetsons” ran on ABC starting in 1962, following George, wife Jane, kids Judy and Elroy, robot maid Rosie and dog Astro through a Space Age version of suburbia built around flying cars and video calls. It got a modest theatrical outing in 1990 with the animated “Jetsons: The Movie,” which pulled in about $20 million domestically, but live-action has never made it to a finished film. Adam Shankman was linked to a version in 2003. Robert Rodriguez took a swing at a CGI adaptation in 2007. Robert Zemeckis produced a live-action pilot for ABC in 2017 that never got picked up to series. All of it stalled before reaching a screen.

Whether this attempt breaks that streak is still an open question given how far out the release window sits. Warner Bros.’ own slate lists “Jetsons” among a cluster of post-2027 titles that includes the “Game of Thrones” film “Aegon’s Conquest,” a new “Matrix” movie and the next “Batman” sequel — years out from a set date, but, for the first time, officially real.
