Disney has confirmed that Demi Lovato is stepping back into the role that made her a star. Just two days before “Camp Rock 3” premieres, the studio revealed the singer-actress will appear on screen as Mitchie Torres, closing the book on months of fan speculation about whether the original leading lady would return, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The reveal marks a notable reversal from how the sequel was first pitched to fans. When Disney Branded Television first announced Camp Rock 3, it confirmed that Joe, Nick, and Kevin Jonas would return as Connect 3. Demi Lovato, however, was involved only as an executive producer at the time, with Disney yet to confirm whether she would appear on screen. as MovieWeb reported at the time. That left her return as Mitchie an open question for the better part of a year.
From the Sidelines Back to Camp
The uncertainty ended this week when Lovato posted a still from the film on Instagram with a five-word caption: “y’all miss me? xoxo, mitchie.” She followed it with a nostalgic photo dump from the original two films, captioned “mitchie 4 ever,” as Rolling Stone noted. The confirmation landed just ahead of Monday’s Los Angeles premiere event, where Lovato joined the Jonas Brothers on the carpet, per Deadline.
Director Veronica Rodriguez explained that bringing Mitchie back was the result of detailed discussions with Lovato about the character’s role. The intention was to make her return meaningful to the story while still allowing the new generation of campers to remain at the center of the film. according to Billboard.
Who’s Back, Who’s New
Joining Lovato and the Jonas Brothers is Maria Canals-Barrera, reprising her role as Mitchie’s mother, Connie — now the camp’s director rather than its cook, a small but notable shift from the earlier films. The new generation of campers is led by Liamani Segura and Malachi Barton, alongside Lumi Pollack, Sherry Cola, Hudson Stone, Casey Trotter, Brooklynn Pitts and Ava Jean, according to the official Disney+ press release.
The story picks up as Connect 3 loses its opening act ahead of a major reunion tour, sending the band back to Camp Rock in search of the next breakout talent — a competition that stirs up rivalries, alliances and new romances among the campers. Eydie Faye wrote the screenplay, Jamal Sims choreographed, and Tim Federle executive produces alongside the Jonas Brothers, Lovato, Betsy Sullenger, Spencer Berman and Gary Marsh.
