Steven Spielberg to Produce ‘The Mandela Catalogue’ Movie Adaptation

Hanry DawsonBy Hanry DawsonJuly 3, 2026 Movie Reviews

Steven Spielberg is set to produce a feature film adaptation of the popular YouTube analog horror series The Mandela Catalogue. The project has been picked up by Amblin Entertainment, United Artists, and Amazon MGM Studios following a competitive bidding war.

Spielberg and Major Studios Secure Rights

Amblin Entertainment, United Artists, and Amazon MGM Studios have acquired the film rights to The Mandela Catalogue after an 11-studio bidding war. Steven Spielberg and Holly Bario will produce for Amblin, while Scott Stuber and Nick Nesbitt are producing for United Artists. Aaron B. Koontz of Paper Street Pictures is also attached as a producer. TheWrap

Alex Kister to Direct the Adaptation

The film will be directed by Alex Kister, the 22-year-old creator of the original YouTube series. Kister co-wrote the screenplay with Tyler Clifton. Both Kister and Clifton are also serving as producers on the project. This follows a similar path to the recent Backrooms movie, where the original creator was brought on to direct the feature adaptation. CBR

The Mandela Catalogue is a viral analog horror series that launched on YouTube in 2021. It has accumulated over 100 million views across its episodes. The story is set in the fictional Mandela County and revolves around disturbing entities known as “Alternates,” which are shape-shifting doppelgangers that manipulate victims through psychological terror rather than traditional jump scares. Hollywood’s Growing Interest in Internet Horror

The deal comes shortly after the box office success of other internet-born horror projects, most notably The Backrooms. Studios are increasingly looking toward viral YouTube horror series for big-screen adaptations due to their built-in fanbases and distinctive visual styles. The Mandela Catalogue is known for its unsettling analog horror aesthetic, which mimics distorted VHS tapes and old television broadcasts. IGN

    Current Development Status

The project is currently in early development. No release date or cast has been announced yet. The film is expected to blend traditional narrative storytelling with found-footage elements, staying true to the tone of the original series. Dread Central

Steven Spielberg’s involvement through Amblin Entertainment has generated significant interest in the project. While Spielberg is primarily known for blockbuster and family-oriented films, his production company has backed several horror and thriller projects in recent years. Industry observers see this as a sign that major studios are taking analog and internet horror seriously as a viable theatrical genre. Fangoria

The Mandela Catalogue movie marks another major step in Hollywood’s efforts to adapt popular online horror content for the big screen. More updates on casting, plot details, and production timeline are expected in the coming months.
