Haymitch’s Origin Story Begins: First Look at Joseph Zada as Young Haymitch

Hanry DawsonBy Hanry DawsonJuly 4, 2026 Trailers

The upcoming Hunger Games prequel Sunrise on the Reaping has given fans their first official look at Joseph Zada as a young Haymitch Abernathy. The short featurette offers an early glimpse into the character’s origin story during the 50th Hunger Games.

The release has sparked excitement among fans who have been waiting to see how Haymitch’s journey began before he became the mentor known from the original films.

First Official Footage of Young Haymitch Released

A special “Meet Haymitch” featurette dropped on July 4, showing Joseph Zada in character as a teenage Haymitch. The clip has already generated significant discussion online, with many fans analyzing how the new actor brings the younger version of the character to life.

ComicBook.com reported that the footage focuses on introducing the character rather than showing action sequences, setting expectations for a more character-driven story.

Joseph Zada Cast as Young Haymitch

Joseph Zada was announced as the actor playing young Haymitch in April 2025 after an extensive casting process. The 20-year-old Australian actor previously appeared in local productions before landing this major role in the franchise.

According to Teen Vogue, producers were looking for someone who could capture the essence of Haymitch before the trauma of the Games changed him, rather than simply copying Woody Harrelson’s performance.

The Story of Sunrise on the Reaping

The film is set 24 years before the events of the first Hunger Games movie. It follows 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy as he competes in the brutal Second Quarter Quell, where each district was forced to send twice the normal number of tributes into the arena.

Vanity Fair noted that the movie will also explore Haymitch’s personal life in District 12, including his relationship with Lenore Dove Baird, played by Whitney Peak.

How the Prequel Connects to the Original Films

One of the main challenges for the production has been creating a believable younger version of Haymitch while staying consistent with Woody Harrelson’s iconic portrayal. The film aims to show the events that shaped him into the cynical and protective mentor seen in the original series.

DNA Magazine highlighted that the story will reveal how Haymitch’s experiences in the 50th Games affected him for the rest of his life.

    Francis Lawrence Returns as Director

The film is being directed by Francis Lawrence, who previously directed Catching Fire and both parts of Mockingjay. His involvement has been seen as a positive sign by fans who appreciated his work on the earlier entries.

As reported by the Sydney Morning Herald, Lawrence’s return is expected to help maintain visual and tonal consistency with the established Hunger Games films.

Positive Early Reactions to the Casting

The pairing of Joseph Zada as Haymitch and Whitney Peak as Lenore Dove has received strong early feedback. Producers described their chemistry during casting as a “magical moment.”

According to the Economic Times, the production team conducted an exhaustive search before finalizing both lead actors for the prequel.

What to Expect Before the November Release

The upcoming prequel The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is scheduled to premiere in theaters on November 20, 2026. As more footage and details are released in the coming months, anticipation for the film is expected to grow steadily among fans of the franchise.

For many viewers, this first look at Joseph Zada as young Haymitch marks the beginning of a new chapter that could provide deeper insight into one of the most important characters in the Hunger Games universe.
